Following Tuesday night’s 3-0 defeat at home against Portsmouth in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. In a very similar vein to what I have just posted in the 3 things to beat Accrington thread…our central midfield really needs to start to impose itself on games. We lose far too many battles in this area and when you have quality opposition such as Joe Morrell playing against you in that area, those currently wearing the shirts for us in that part of the pitch just can’t compete. Players are too similar and those who might be able to bring the ball forward are often isolated out wide where their influence is restricted. You also have the problem of our lone striker being too isolated and second balls falling to nobody because they are not seeing where that ball just might drop because they are too far away. More cohesion is needed in this area or changes need to be made to both tactics and personnel.

2. When your confidence is shot, your game is affected. I’m not going to point fingers at individuals here. They will know themselves who they are. What was clear from some of the players was a nervousness in not wanting to make a mistake and as a consequence, they took too long to make decisions thereby making mistakes which ultimately cost us the game. I’m not sure that there is an easy solution to this other than those individuals getting back to doing the basics well. That way their confidence should gradually increase.

3. Any Imp pondering about holidays next year can safely look at offers from May onwards. This season at best will be one of consolidation and we won’t be featuring in those end-of-season play-offs. I know some have said look where Oxford and Blackpool were this time last season, but that was something of an anomaly from usual seasons. We will be concentrating more upon those currently below us in this league.
