Views from imps_joe following last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at home against Ipswich Town: “Really frustrating game. Two currently middling teams with one able to actually score. As soon as Ipswich scored they weren’t interested in playing and were happy to waste time. Unless the teams improve, neither will be competing at the top. Can only see Ipswich improving once thier team gels.

We could have been playing all night and wouldn’t have scored. I’ve not seen such an inept crossing performance in a while. We got into so many good areas, but time after time crosses was over everyone or into the first man. Either that or pop shots from the edge of area. Disappointed that we didn’t try to do anything different when it clearly wasn’t working. The Ipswich keeper didn’t have much to do in all honesty, but much of that was down to the defence in front of him that, in fairness, defended the area very well.

I was very disappointed with Bishop, I had high expectations but he was the invisible man, especially in the second half. Fiorini had a decent game, but I think the midfield need to offer more movement to give the defenders options.

The biggest issue today was lack of pace and urgency. Our approach was obvious and we allowed Ipswich to set up each time. No surprise that Bramall was our most dangerous player going forward, unfortunately, some crosses didn’t hit the mark. Griffiths had a good game and didn’t really put a foot wrong and N’Lundulu looked decent when he came on.

Hope I’m wrong, but could be a bit of a slog to get to the January transfer window. Time for a beer.”

sedgleyimp: “Back home after what was ultimately quite a frustrating match today. I don’t think that we played that badly up to the final ball and inside their 18-yard box. The difference between the teams, in the end, was one piece of excellent finishing by Bonne from a good cross. Our passing was far crisper today than it was on Tuesday and on a number of occasions we were literally millimetres away from getting behind them. But the final ball was lacking on so many occasions that good positions were constantly wasted.

Ipswich were clearly in a false position before kick-off, though they seemed intent on doing anything other than defend the lead in the second half, but they had enough experience within their team to do that with relative ease.

We have developed a habit of playing slowly at home in the first half and I was disappointed that today we just didn’t take the game to them early on. They grew in confidence as the match progressed and we just didn’t have the nous to break through their defence.

Onto the next few games. I feel that we are playing catch up already if we are serious about another challenge at the top. This league is pretty unforgiving this season and I think it will be very difficult for any team to come through the pack like Blackpool did last season. We need to ensure that we don’t fall too far back”

PerthImp: “I agree with some that we turned in a below-par performance, particularly in midfield, but we battered their penalty area in the second half, just without effect. The thing that stood out for me, on reflection, was that basically, Ipswich choked the life out of the game in the second half. When you look at large sections of the play in the second half they often had nine men in the final third (& occasionally ten) and we just didn’t have the craft to get the ball through such a congested area because our midfield and strikers were choked out of it, apart from playing slightly below par. The question is, was that down to us playing badly or Ipswich just doing a professional job (ably supported by a useless set of officials). Just have to accept it and move on. Be interesting to see how we get on in the next two (away) games given our style of play.”

berksimps: “How we missed someone like Johnson yesterday. No one in the side has his pace and self-confidence, and probably skill, to take on multiple players and break down defences. We have been battered twice this season: v Oxford and Rotherham, but yesterday we did the battering. The big difference was that Oxford and Rotherham created numerous excellent goal scoring chances but we did not.

We have lost to a goal from an unfair first half push, but still had an hour to right that wrong. The move for Poole’s “goal“ was virtually the only quick bit of football we played during that hour. It was a poor watch, and by half time the score already had a certain inevitability about it. This was reflected in the crowd noise.

No knee jerk reaction, just reality; we need to be quicker and more creative at home. My expectation is for a mid-table (12-14) end to the season but hope for better. There’s nothing wrong with having positive hope.”
