Imps News

“It’s up and down at the moment but we need to give him time.”

|

The Imps first meeting with Northampton Town since returning to the Football League was the first match of this season at Sixfields, in front of a crowd of 6,242. The Imps came away with all three points that day but were extremely lucky to do so. Some fantastic saves by Josh Vickers kept Northampton out, in what was described as the “Best performance by any ‘keeper wearing a Lincoln shirt that I have seen in 55 years” by Vital Lincoln City member Impalex.

The two sides were drawn together in the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup in November. City won 3-2 that day in front of a crowd of 6,012 at Sincil Bank. Harry Anderson put The Imps ahead in the 16th minute, Tom Pett made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute, but just 3 minutes later Jack Bridge pulled one back for The Cobblers. Kevin Van Veen made it 2-2 in the 82nd minute. The match was level heading into stoppage time, but Bruno Andrade had saved the best until last, scoring a stunning goal in the 2nd minute of stoppage time. Northampton finished the match with 10 men. Junior Morias was sent off in the 9th minute of stoppage time for violent conduct.

Anyway, time for the Q&A!

Thank you to Northampton Town supporter Charles for answering our questions!

How long have you supported Northampton Town?

Since I was about 9 or 10. So around 25 years.

Where did you finish last season?

We were relegated from League 1 in 22nd place.

What do you think of your Manager?

Keith Curle has come in and been a bit up and down so far. His reign started well but then the team started to be changed each week and we’ve drawn far too many games since with not enough wins

What were your hopes and expectations at the start of the season?

Promotion. Boy was that wide of the mark!

One(s) to watch?

Sam Hoskins has just scored his first two league goals of the season, one of which was a worldie! You never know, he may score again. Charlie Goode on loan from Scunthorpe is a very tidy defender with good composure and reading of the game.

Who do you think will finish in the top 7?

Not us! I think the teams who are there now will. Forest Green Rovers, Carlisle United, Milton Keynes Dons and Exeter City.

Who do you think will finish in the bottom 2?

Notts County and one of Macclesfield Town or Morecambe.

What are your thoughts on Lincoln City?

Not much to be honest. I think they’ve done exceptionally well the last few years and you have a fantastic management team.

What do you think the score will be?

1-1.

Random fact about your Club?

We went from the 4th division to the 1st and back down again in the quickest time ever.

If you could steal one Lincoln City player for your own team, who would it be and why?

John Akinde. Goals!

What are your proudest and most embarrassing moments as a Northampton Town Supporter?

Proudest – winning at Wembley in 1997. Beating Liverpool at Anfield on penalties and winning League 2 in 2016.

Who would you say is your most underrated player?

Jay Williams. He’s a youth academy product and will be far too good for League 2 very soon.

Do you have a Supporters Trust and what role do they play at the Club?

Yes. They were the first Supporters Club back in 1992. They aren’t as involved in the club as they would like anymore.

Which was your favourite match involving Northampton Town?

Beating Liverpool at Anfield in the League Cup.

Which was your least favourite match involving Northampton Town?

Any time we lose to Peterborough United.

Do you have a Former Players Association at Northampton Town?

I don’t think so.

What’s the best thing about Northampton?

Ha! Erm…it is home to first-class Cricket, Rugby and Football.

Were the departures of Van Veen and Crookes a result of an enforced mid-season budget cut?

More the fact they didn’t want to be here I think. They would have been the highest earners at the club so many probably was a factor too though.

How is the ‘love affair’ with Keith Curle going?

It’s up and down at the moment but we need to give him time, something we haven’t given (rightly or wrongly) to our last 4 managers. We’ll know more next season when he has a pre-season and his own players behind him.
