“I personally think that he has been perhaps our key player so far this season.”

Ahead of Friday night’s match against Shrewsbury Town in Sky Bet League One, we asked our members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Ensure Michael O’Connor is fit enough to start this game. I personally think that he has been perhaps our key player so far this season. We seem to play better when he starts a game for us. His defensive play in midfield allows our other midfield players the opportunity to be more expressive when attacking. He protects the back four keeping them more secure and generally is our general in the middle of the park. The game at Peterborough changed to our detriment once he went off injured and we need to get him off the treatment table and in the starting eleven.

2. Midfield support for Tyler Walker. We have a good goalscorer in Walker but that burden needs to be shared around more. If he is contained by the opposition there are question marks on who is going to put the ball in the net for us. The attacking midfielders such as Payne, Grant, Andrade, Morrell need to support Walker in the final third of the pitch to give us that extra threat in the penalty box.

3. Speedy distribution from the back. Fortunately, we seem to have stopped playing horizontal passes across the back four as much as we were and that speed of distribution worked well against Sunderland a couple of weeks ago. Teams in this league can be beaten with quick counter-attacks and we have players with the speed and ball control to exploit this.
