Ahead of tonight’s match against Liverpool in the Third Round of the League Cup, we have done a Q&A with one of their supporters, Jonathan Higgins. Thank you to Sam Ashoo for recommending Jonathan. Enjoy talking about The Imps? Get involved with tonight’s Match Thread!

How long have you supported Liverpool?

I grew up in a family of living supporting parents so all my life really. Didn’t really have a choice in the matter!

What do you think of your Manager?

I don’t think there are enough words in the dictionary to describe Jürgen Klopp. The way he has transformed the football club both on and off the pitch is nothing short of remarkable. A manager I think every supporter secretly would love at their football club.

What are your hopes and expectations for the 2020/21 season?

It’s a season like none ever before so in that sense, it can be difficult to try and predict into the future in these ever-changing times. That been said confidence levels around the team that were at an all-time high, have been increased even more so with the recent additions to the squad. I think we all must pinch ourselves watching Thiago Alcantara wearing the red kit.

The aim must be to retain the league title and hopefully lift it front a packed Anfield this time. The club’s love affair with the European Cup will always be on the back of people’s minds also.

It will be a big, big ask particularly with this hectic fixture calendar and the added risk of injuries, but this squad is good to win both the League and European Cup. Time will tell whether that’s achievable or not, but that’s my hope and expectation for the season ahead.

One(s) to watch?

Aside from the obvious high-profile player’s the player I’m most looking forward to seeing this year is Takumi Minamino. A wonderful talented player who we haven’t seen the best of yet.

Which teams you think will finish in the top four of the Premier League?

Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Arsenal.

Which teams do you think will finish in the bottom three of the Premier League?

West Brom, Fulham & West Ham.

What are your thoughts on Lincoln City?

Thanks to Zak Elbouzedi and the recent breakthrough of Sean Roughan I have been keeping an extra eye out lately.

What do you think the score will be?

3-1 Liverpool.

Random fact about your Club?

Anfield was originally owned by Everton before a dispute over the rent saw them leave.

What are your proudest and most embarrassing moments as a Liverpool supporter?

For embarrassing it’s hard to decide whether to pick the Roy Hodgson era or the way former owners Hicks and Gillette nearly brought the club to its knees.

After hearing all the stories from family and friends watching Jordan Henderson lift the European Cup in Madrid was an extremely proud moment. I will be boring my grandchildren with stories from that trip in the years to come.

Who would you say is your most underrated player?

Judging by the reaction to his potential sale to Barcelona this summer you would have to say Gini Wijnaldum.

Do you have a Supporters Trust and what role do they play at the Club?

Yes, Spirit of Shankly. They are regularly involved with so much good work supporting the food bank charities. Their most high-profile involvement was in the campaign to remove former owners, Hicks and Gillett, and most recent disputes over excessive ticket prices and availing of the government Furlong scheme.

Which was your favourite match involving Liverpool?

There have been plenty of special nights at Anfield over the years but the Liverpool Barcelona CL semi-final tops the lot. I have never heard noise like it. Anfield at its brilliant defiance best. I’m getting goosebumps even typing this thinking back to that night.

Which was your least favourite match involving Liverpool?

Take your pick from the Hodgson era, let’s go with the Northampton League Cup exit. A low point of a nightmare era.

Do you have a Former Players Association at Liverpool?

Yes, Forever Reds.

What is the best thing about Liverpool?

It’s such an amazing city to visit, friendly and brilliant nightlife.

Who, in your opinion, is Liverpool’s ultimate cult hero?

From the current squad, it has to be Divock Origi. I mean look at the number of high-profile goals he has scored despite being out of the side and even squad for some time.

Which one of your players would make a good loan move for us?

There is quite a talent pool coming through the ranks at the moment, someone like Harvey Elliott would be a great addition.

Have you ever watched League One football before?

Yes, I am a hardcore football nerd so will watch every type of football going given the opportunity.

Are you bothered about the Carabao Cup? Would you be bothered if we beat you?

Been realistic the Carabao is at the bottom of the priority list but it’s an excellent opportunity to blood some of the younger players. Take last season alone, Neco Williams and Curtis Jones ended up playing first-team football after playing prominent roles in this competition.

You may not be old enough to answer this one, but there is a story – perhaps apocryphal – that Shankly retired because he thought Liverpool didn’t want him anymore. Is there any truth in that?

Sorry a little before my time!

Keegan, Rush or Fowler? You can only choose one.

Now that is a tough one. I idolised Fowler as a kid, but Rush was just out of this world. Would fit right into this current day side as well.

Now Klopp has won the European Cup (showing my age) and the Premier League, are there any fears that he could be lured away?

Not for any time some. He sees the potential in this squad, and will no doubt be looking to add multiple pieces of silverware before he eventually does move on.

With Everton planning a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, do you think Liverpool will be tempted to follow suit? Would the fans ever support a move from Anfield?

Absolutely no way. Never going to happen, refer to my earlier answer about the Barcelona CL semi-final.

What was the most exciting for you, winning the league after all those years or the latest European Cup win?

Don’t get me wrong they were both truly special times. What a trip the Madrid was?! But winning the league are so long, something I waited all my life to see after so many false dawns and disappointment tops it. It’s just a pity that Anfield wasn’t packed to witness that Hendo shuffle.

Given Jurgens manic but highly effective gegenpressing system, which other teams have given Liverpool the most difficulty in the last couple of seasons and why?

It was a game that was ultimately decided by a goalkeeping howler but the ultra-defensive park the double-decker bus approach taken by Atletico Madrid in the CL last season has caused the coaching staff most concern. It has ultimately led to the summer-long chase and acquisition of Thiago to add some “unpredictability” to midfield in an attempt to open up defensive lines with his world-class ability.
