“He made himself constantly available and basically ran the first half.”

Views from PerthImp following Saturday’s 3-2 win at home against Newport County: “Wow, what a game. First half was as good as I’ve seen – mind you, good job we got a two-goal start! The second half was a real battle and Newport fought hard. I can see why they have been so inconsistent with wins & losses. Fair play to them, they pushed us hard, but we almost self-destructed when Smith under hit the pass to Shackell which led to their second. Great team performance but, for me, Frecklington MoM – he was immense, covered so much ground, he made himself constantly available and basically ran the first half particularly. Dug in the second half & fought hard. Akinde, Harry & Pett all good too. Well earned three points where once again, the character shone through.”

More views from the Match Thread:

Chimpimp: “Newport caused us more problems in the air than any other side this season, which is how they built their pressure initially, along with us playing a bit cautiously with 2 goal leads.

However, I also think we are beginning to play some really good stuff now. The first 30 minutes today (and last week) we were excellent. The 3 in midfield gives us more control and also a goal threat. Think another midfielder of a similar calibre should be the first priority in the transfer window (if we are going with a 3man midfield).

To be able to win a game with a howler from Smith is a good sign. We will play as well as we did at the start again but not expecting too many more goals like their second.

Without that goal, you would have judged it as a comfortable win against a good side.

Akinde was a real handful as he has been most of the season, once fit. Feel a bit sorry for the minority who were criticising him earlier in the season, that they could n ‘t see what he does and that the goals were sure to follow. Just needed a dose of confidence and a bit of luck.

Barring a major injury misfortune and a disaster in the transfer window, can’t see us being far away come May.”

Skip155: “My immediate reaction is that we tried to play the same style of play as last week but didn’t quite manage to do it as effectively. Danny talked about our evolution in one of his press conferences this week and it’s crystal clear to me over the last couple of matches.”

hulloutpost: “Newport are a decent pressing side with excellent aerial presence. They remind me of us in our National league championship season and they will do well. A good result against very much playoff contenders. Newport manager thinks they were better than us. Jog on, just disappointed that in spite of us gifting them two goals and taking our foot off the pedal we clearly had too much quality for them.”
