The Imps take on last seasons National League Champions today at Moss Rose. The Silkmen averaged two points per game in their title-winning season, finishing ten points ahead of eventual playoff winners Tranmere Rovers.

Macclesfield currently sit in 23rd place after seven games back in League Two, with two points, having drawn two games and lost five.

Thank you to Macclesfield Town supporters Martin and Andrew for answering our questions!

How long have you supported Macclesfield Town?

Martin: I’ve supported The Silkmen since around 1985.

Andrew: I’ve been a Macclesfield Town supporter for around ten years.

Where did you finish last season?

National League Champions.

What do you think of your Manager?

Martin: See my answer below.

Andrew: Not a fan of the football at the moment to be honest.

What are your hopes and expectations for this season?

Martin: Just at the moment, I’d would settle for staying up!

Andrew: To stay up and have a decent cup run.

One(s) to watch?

Martin: The evergreen Danny Whitaker and a young loanee Malachi Napa who is only 19 and looks an exciting prospect.

Andrew: Malachi Napa and Danny Whitaker are both class players.

Who do you think will finish in the top 7?

Martin: Lincoln City, Newport County, Milton Keynes Dons, Colchester United, Mansfield Town, Swindon Town and Exeter City.

Andrew: Milton Keynes Dons, Lincoln City, Oldham Athletic, Exeter City, Mansfield Town, Newport County and Swindon Town.

Who do you think will finish in the bottom 2?

Martin: Morecambe and Northampton Town.

Andrew: Morecambe and Cheltenham Town.

What are your thoughts on Lincoln City?

Martin: Old rivals who seem to be going the right way under their current manager.

Andrew: We have a good connection with the likes of Keith Alexander and Richard Butcher.

What do you think the score will be?

Martin: 1-1.

Andrew: 3-0 to Lincoln.

What will your likely default formation and style of play be for this season?

Martin: We have tried them all I think! 3-5-2 might have possibilities.

Andrew: 4-5-1 or 3-4-3.

Random fact about your Club?

Martin: I remember a game against Grimsby in 2009 when both teams brought on a sub after 67 minutes. Both subs were called Ben Wright!

Andrew: The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) supports us.

If you could steal one Lincoln City player for your own team, who would it be and why?

Martin: John Akinde – we need a goalscorer.

Andrew: John Akinde.

What are your proudest and most embarrassing moments as a Macclesfield Town Supporter?

Martin: Getting into the Football League first time around in 1997/8 and losing 6-0 at Fylde last season.

Andrew: The proudest moment was winning the Conference last season and the most embarrassing was losing 6-0 away to Fylde.

Who would you say is your most underrated player?

Martin: Tyrone Marsh always give 100% and has more ability than he is sometimes given credit for.

Andrew: David Fitzpatrick.

Do you have a Supporters Trust and what role do they play at the Club?

Martin: Yes, we do and they work very hard in the background. Recently helped to provide more up to date computers with the necessary software.

Andrew: Yes and they fundraise for the club.

Which was your favourite match involving Macclesfield Town?

Martin: Winning our first ever Football League match against Torquay back in 1997.

Andrew: Last season versus Woking. We won the game at the last minute and it was live on television.

Which was your least favourite match involving Macclesfield Town?

Martin: The bad day at Fylde – and they didn’t have reduced price tickets for pensioners!!

Andrew: Probably the Fylde game last season, when we lost 6-0.

I don’t need to be rude, but are you following us around?

Martin: We do have something of a history, don’t we?

Andrew: I always keep an eye on Lincoln. I was there when they won the Conference against us.

There are people who believe the gap between League Two and Non-League is narrow, which obviously isn’t the case. What initially stood out as the main differences have been between the Leagues in your opening games?

Martin: Finishing. Our defensive mistakes have been punished.

Andrew: There is a lot more pace and you cannot make mistakes in this League.

Do you think you are better equipped this time around for life in the Football League?

Martin: Last time we only lost one of our “Conference” winning team. This time we have lost 5 plus 2 long-term injuries so the answer is probably not.

Andrew: I believe we still need to make a few more signings and that we need to play better football.

It might be a little controversial but how did losing their manager in the summer affect their preparations for this season and even at this early stage of the season have they appointed the right man at the helm?

Martin: We effectively lost seven players with limited funds to bolster the squad. Mark Yates has come under fire from the Macc faithful – well we have gained 2 points from a possible 21. He has a decent track though and I think he will turn things around.

Andrew: He had been with us for 34 years so it’s affected us a lot. We lost a few of our players and our playing style isn’t the same anymore.
