Championship side Sheffield Wednesday will be backed by 1,908 supporters when they take on The Imps at Sincil Bank on Friday 13th July. Kick-off is 19:30.
The last meeting between the two sides was back in November 1979 in the first round of The FA Cup at Hillsborough. This match finished 3-0 to The Owls.
I’ve never seen us play Sheffield Wednesday and for several years I’ve really wanted us to, but unfortunately, I’ll be away on holiday with someone (& other family members) that has also wanted to see the two sides face each other for quite some time! (My future brother-in-law, Jon)
Jon and I have been to Hillsborough quite a few times together. I remember a few of our trips there quite well, including their 4-1 defeat against Wrexham in the League Cup on 23rd August 2006, their 1-1 draw at home against Manchester City in the FA Cup on 7th January 2007 and their 2-0 win against Middlesbrough on 4th May 2013.
Wednesday’s 2-0 win at home against Middlesbrough secured their survival in The Championship, just two weeks after I’d watched The Imps secure their survival in the Conference with a 5-1 win away at Hyde. Former Lincoln City player Mustapha Carayol was on the pitch for Middlesbrough that day and if I’m completely honest, I didn’t even know that until he was taken off in the 66th minute and Jon turned to me and said: “Didn’t he used to play for Lincoln?”. Clearly, Muzzy didn’t really do much during his time on the pitch!
Anyway, I’m gutted that I’ll be missing the pre-season friendly. I’m sure the atmosphere at Sincil Bank on Friday 13th July will be loud!
