“Excellent second half after we rode our luck a couple of times in the first 45 minutes.”

Views from Merthyr Imp following yesterday’s 2-1 win away at Crewe Alexandra in the First Round of the Carabao Cup: “Excellent second half after we rode our luck a couple of times in the first 45 minutes.

That’s now three goals in the last two games for Hopper.

I agree about Montsma being man of the match. I thought Eyoma was better on the ground than in the air – he gave a Crewe player a free header early on which could have easily been a goal, and it seemed as if he was the one also giving another free header for their goal.

But I thought we did well considering it was a makeshift back four, and that Roughan was better than Bradley.

Second to Montsma, I thought Grant overall had a good game, and I didn’t think Edun was as bad as some others have said. Difficult to judge Jones and McGrandles as I found it difficult to identify them – and Michael Hortin didn’t always do so.

More reaction from 100% Imps:

sedgleyimp: “That is a very nice win. Lots of positives there. Hopper ran the line really well I thought. Grant is way more productive when placed centrally. Defence all did pretty well considering they are so inexperienced. Like Eyoma’s pace and distribution. Montsma gets my MOM though. Thought he looked very good and an added bonus with that finish.”

hulloutpost: “Bridcutt and three defensive changes will make us look a lot more secure out of possession so with that to look forward to and the second half performance a thoroughly heartening day all round.”

Chesterimp: “That can be summarised as an excellent further preseason workout, experience for the younger and newer players ( ie most if the team), identify and address weaknesses and develop strong points.

They showed signs of doing that during the game with the stronger second half.

And some selection issues already- Jackson and Walsh presumably seen as the first choice CB pairing, but Montsma in particular looks set to challenge that.

Next Saturday will be a much sterner test though and we’ll need to be on our game from the off.”
