DC: “We’re expecting a tough game.”

Danny Cowley spoke to the press ahead of the Carabao Cup tie against Port Vale on Tuesday. Once again he exuded an air of calm confidence.

Swindon Game: DC declared he is now a Lincolnshire boy so had been able to have a good look back at the match and had prepared a suitable presentation for the players. He was happy with minutes 10 to 35 and particularly how well Imps finished. He emphasised twice how impressed he was with the subs that came on that allowed City to regain control of the match via possession. DC felt the players needed to be more ruthless at 2 nil and intensity had dropped in combination with a Swindon tactical tweak which led to them wrestling control for the mid third of the game. DC understood that was to be expected with a new group and work was needed on maintaining momentum when not in control of a game. He felt the scoreline flattered the Imps but was delighted with the outcome though Imps are without doubt a work in progress.

New Signings: Confirmation he is still looking for wide player and midfielder, financial considerations will dictate the outcome.

Squad Quality: The depth is driving standards but still a lot of work required on tactical flexibility to make it difficult for opponents to second guess how Imps will set up. Basically, City is in transition so far as that goes, particularly where roles and partnerships within the team are concerned.

Port Vale: Looking forward to the game and wants to get on the right side of the result as there are good ties to be had against Champ. and Prem. sides. Without a doubt, DC will be looking to utilise the squad and ‘look after’ one or two for ‘different’ reasons. There is a heavy workload in the first couple of weeks of the season plus some players need game time. It is absolutely right to rotate a quality squad and that will not devalue the competition. Port Vale have a huge pitch which comes into the game plan with City looking to utilise a strategy that nullifies Port Vale weaknesses and amplifies City strengths. Port Vale finished strongly in the second half of last season and they have some expectancy about the club this year. Experienced players are evident and DC described Pope/Miller partnership as a real handful when they watched Valiants victory over Cambridge. DC confirmed in the event of a draw it is straight to pens w/o e/t which he is ready for and pleased with – a sensible move by the EFL.
