Ahead of Imps gracing the Sky Sports cameras against Mansfield Town on Monday Danny Cowley took the opportunity to explain his ethos for man management and dealing with pressure.

Mansfield: There is natural rivalry due to their locality and similar league position to Imps. DC felt although pegged back in the corresponding fixture The Imps had played well and took a lot from that game. Mansfield pursues a model of signing quality loan players which ensures they have players above L2 level who will go onto play at higher levels. Consequently, they have some of, if not the best players within the division. Imps squad have those important qualities of great spirit with everybody fighting for the cause.

Man Management and Coping with Pressure: DC noted that clubs at the top of the league tended to use fewer players but January had been vital to cover all bases such as injury and suspension. He agreed with the press that Bolger, Rowe and O’Hara had come in and made a difference when called upon. The competition is vital to drive standards, for example, John Akinde has four or five players vying to play up front. Regarding the players who had not played regularly DC is very aware that everybody wants to play and if they are not in the side there is understandable natural frustration. He counters that by fully involving the whole squad in everything that is going on in training whether that is tactics or playing in the hope that those individuals can see the bigger picture. The staff seek to keep the players motivated and DC trusts that as they have excellent character they appreciate the development work that is put into them.

DC uses constant internal pressure to drive the standards and doesn’t fear being overwhelmed by that as it is only work if ‘you’ perceive it as such and he most certainly doesn’t. He loves football, enjoying the effort that goes into constantly improving and the process that goes with that.

Miscellaneous: Due to the excellent work of the sports science and medical staff DC hopes to have a full roster to choose from for Mansfield game – unusual at this time of year.

Away form (best in The EFL) is particularly pleasing as that tells DC so much about the character and grit of the group. Whilst on reflection Imps have been undone by some very good long distance goals at home the overall stats show less than a goal a game is conceded by City and very few from box entries so heart can be taken from that. Only 1 defeat since October is proof of consistency.
