Ahead of Saturday’s match at home against Crewe Alexandra in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Get back to the basics. Over the last few games, the composure of the early part of the season has been noticeably absent. This has been most apparent in the slick passing and movement of previously being that much poorer of late. Many of the attempted passes have been done at speed, one-touch, without too much thought and consideration. They look good when they come off, but more often lately they haven’t so they look very bad. Confidence in getting passing right will ebb, meaning that more and more passes go astray. This leads to players trying too hard to make amends, which again makes mistakes more likely. There is a need to just slow things down and get back to the basics that we were doing so very well only a couple of months ago.

2. Score first. This is stating the bleedin’ obvious, but if we concede first we struggle. This is part of the first point as well as that desire to get back on terms often leads to passes being rushed and wrong decisions made. We were fortunate when playing at Wigan that we were gifted a quick equaliser but even in that game, if we went in behind at half time we might not have come away with the three points. Keep our goal intact and take an early chance. We’ll win if that happens.

3. Play Morton and Hopper together. Callum Morton will score goals for us, but he is ill-suited to the number 9 position. Hopper is a superb lone striker leading the line and bringing in other players. They are not similar strikers, and to replace one with another won’t get the full benefits from them. The reality is if we can get these two playing together and alongside each other, in an attacking sense both will score goals, and both will make goals for the other. I appreciate that a front 2 is not how MA likes to play it, but sometimes a plan B is needed from the start and with Crewe’s poor defensive record, Saturday just might be that time to try something a bit different.
