Crewe Alexandra 2-0 Lincoln City: Match Stats & Views From The Forum

|

Views from imps_joe following the 2-0 defeat away at Crewe Alexandra in League One on Tuesday night: “Another frustrating game. Crewe looked pretty dire and you can see why they were bottom of the league. Prior to the penalties, they looked as capable of scoring a goal from open play as us – not very.

We started well, but after Jackson went off Crewe found their feet a bit more. Adelukan has to score the chance in the first half, but Lincoln don’t do goals.

Thought Bridcutt was superb, he was everywhere on the pitch and offers the much-needed grit and quality in midfield. I hope the 45 minutes was game time management and not another injury. When it turned out that he wasn’t coming on after half-time, I feared for the worst.

The worst came moments later after a baffling decision from the ref to award a penalty to Crewe. No appeal from players or fans, leaving us lincoln fans in the ground perplexed. Penalty emphatically dispatched.

The worry when we go 1 down is that heads drop. There wasn’t even time for heads to drop before lincoln enter self-destruction mode. After a defensive shambles Eyoma decides to have a tug at his man who goes down like he’s been shot. No denying a penalty. Can’t comment if the red was right because I couldn’t see the position of our other players clearly. Penalty emphatically dispatched.

2-0 down, 1 man down game over. But, credit to the lads they kept going and the next 15 20 minute spell was solid from us. Another guilt edge chance that we couldn’t put away, Maguire not even hitting the target – Lincoln don’t do goals.

Last 10 minutes we were knackered and Crewe, not unsprisngingly, created a few chances. Thankfully Griffiths had a fantastic last 20 minutes to keep the scoreline down.

The effort was there from Lincoln and so was the grit, which was pleasing. I wish we could put in the same levels and fight with 11 players on the pitch. Unfortunately, some of the basic football skills were missing at times- passing, positioning, movement. Its very difficult to build up pressure if we can’t pass to a teammate from 10 yards. We had another hatful of corners and didn’t even come close to threatening the Crewe goal. There were some good performances today from Griffiths, Montsma, Bridcutt, and Mcgrandles. There were also some performances below the required levels.

I won’t go into where we look weak, this has been thoroughly debated. I was expecting us to pick up more points in recent games than we have accumulated. I wasn’t expecting us to develop a complete phobia of scoring goals. I still have full faith in Appleton to turn this around, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned about the threat of relegation.”

hulloutpost: “Whilst none of the known pre-match issues were addressed during this game and that is a problem; I won’t be letting as bad a refereeing decision as you will see this season, be the defining moment.

The game up to then was evenly matched and could have gone either way. What followed was chaotic, but I trust MA will be given every chance to draw breath and be given the opportunity and backing to resolve the perfect storm that he has endured during the first half of the season.

If he does, the value of the experience he will gain from that as a coach/manager will be significant.

Worried, concerned, but behind the board, the manager and willing the players to find a way. CTID”

sedgleyimp: “Initial thoughts as I drove home was that we were undone tonight by a combination of not having someone who has that goalscoring instinct and a quite bizarre referring display.

However, I am going to put some positive spins on the last 35 minutes of that game. I saw 9 outfield players working their backsides off to try and get something out of the match. Tackles were going in, players were making runs off the ball. It is just a shame it took for us to go a man down for that to happen. But that can be the catalyst for getting out of this run of form. We need that kind of commitment and effort to continue as that is the only way this team will be able to finish 20th or higher. It won’t be through nice football. It will be through putting your foot in and making a nuisance of yourself. I saw that in the last 35 minutes tonight”

Chesterimp: “Ref was atrocious. TJ probably fouled their man for 2nd penalty but the dive was so bad Tom Daley would have been embarrassed and the red card nonsense, you’d hope they’d appeal. Clearly first was a mystery to all. Has MA telephoned the head of the refs association yet?”
