Ahead of Saturday’s match at home against Cambridge United in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Get the ice baths working between now and then. Last night was a monumental effort by our threadbare squad. The pitch looked, from an iFollow perspective, to be really quite heavy and not in the greatest condition. Our players tonight did a fantastic job in stopping Sunderland from playing but you could see that by the end of the match several of them were literally on their knees. They ran themselves into the ground and will need careful and proper care and attention over the next few days. So much will come down to the medical team and those who support them in making sure that tonight’s heroes are back and at it come 3pm on Saturday.

2. Have a bit of patience. The last two games have seen a vast improvement in performance and results. On both occasions, we were able to play in largely a counter-attacking way. Both Oxford and Sunderland were looking to attack and that meant that we had to adapt our performance to counter that, and play on the break. It worked to our advantage. I’m not so sure that Saturday’s opponents will play in the same way. I expect Cambridge to actually play very similar to how we did tonight by harassing our players on the ball and try to frustrate us. We will have to adapt to a very different kind of game. That may require patience both by the players and in the stands.

3. Keep a tight reign on Joe Ironside. Strikers live off confidence and when you have just scored the winning goal in your lower leagues team’s win at Premier League Newcastle United, that confidence will be flowing through you. He is a very decent striker at our level and averages about a goal every other game. He is their most likely goalscorer come Saturday and will need to be closely watched.

Thank you to Graham Burrell and Lincoln City Football Club for the photograph!
