Cambridge United 1-5 Lincoln City: Match Stats & Views From The Forum

|

Views from Brendan Bradley following last Saturday’s 5-1 win away at Cambridge United in League One: “It was a return to our better performances of the first half of last season, and back then as well we were very good at turning over the sides in the lower half of the table, something that our rivals weren’t always so good at.

There should be some caveats, though. I didn’t think we were very good in defence. We were easily panicked when the ball came into our area and there were quite a few occasions too where nobody closed down someone in a shooting position quickly enough. The former led to a fair few last-ditch blocks which you wouldn’t expect from a side that had won 5-1. Their consolation goal was typical of something that could have happened several times.

This was the case when it was 1-0 and it was still happening at 5-1. At one point late in the game, Montsma tore McGrandles off a strip for not tracking a runner. Fortunately, he wandered offside but Montsma was right, the Cambridge midfielder found himself in too much space too easily.

I don’t know why this is. Our defenders are pretty much the same as last season, the only change today was Robson, who is experienced and had a decent debut despite having to play against a team in amber and black, confusingly for him. The midfield still includes Bridcutt and McGrandles.

The game, though, was the reverse of our last outing at Oxford when we got taken to the cleaners in the first half. We looked a level above Cambridge today but they were pretty game. I was thinking it was a bit like Northampton away last season with the early goal, but Cambridge looked a better side than Northampton did.

Fingers crossed we can keep the best of this up with such a hard game this Tuesday.”

PerthImp: “Did enough to hold Cambridge’s improved fight in the second half and still score two more goals. Scully really showing how much he has improved this season – and he was good last season, but suffered a bit from having Rogers &Johnson being picked ahead of him. An impressive debut from Robson. We now have two Championship standard FBs I reckon as Poole is showing his ability as well. The only downside really is possible injuries to Bishop & Bridcutt. Fiorini showing he is ready if needed. Hopefully, they are OK for Tuesday & Saturday where we need a repeat of today. Now the season starts. 👏👏”

sedgleyimp: “Back home and all I can say is what a performance that was. Terrific to a man. I haven’t checked the stats for goal efforts today but there seemed to be an incredible number from both teams. It shows what an early goal can do for confidence. I’m sure that someone has already worked out where that 1st-minute effort ranks in the all-time quickest goal for the Imps, but the players were really up for today from the kick-off and Cambridge just couldn’t cope with the forward attacking play. A joy to behold.

Everyone played well (TJ had a few early moments but settled), but what a player we have in Anthony Scully. If he isn’t in the next Irish squad, their manager needs a serious talking to. He was magnificent today.

Special mention for the linesman on the terraced side who gave one of the worst officiating performances I’ve seen. How he didn’t.”
