Following Tuesday night’s 3-0 win away at Barnsley in the EFL Trophy, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. We as supporters can’t get too analytical or carried away with this game. A good result and a pleasing performance was had and there were plenty of positives from the game. Joe Walsh played his first 45 minutes for what seems an eternity. The balance of the back four looked much better with his left foot allowing for the perfect angles in passes to be executed. Jamie Robson or Sean Roughan will benefit massively if they have a fit Walsh on that side of the defence. Jay Benn had an assured debut and looks capable of filling in at right back. Lasse Sorensen continues to impress in his ‘Bridcutt’ role. Oakley-Boothe looks like he’s starting to settle that little bit more. Vernam showed some good touches and Ted Bishop continued his goalscoring touch from Saturday. Jack Diamond looks a very good signing with his pace and trickery. So having analysed players can we make any assumptions as to how we move forward. Not really. Barnsley made eleven changes from their last league outing and their team looked as if they’d barely met let alone played together. Terrific win, but one to look at in total isolation when considering what we need to do in the league.

2. The competition has some value. The EFL Trophy is somewhat maligned yet we earned £10,000 for the win last night which is probably more than we have earned in getting into the 3rd round of the League Cup. We are in a good place to ensure we progress to the knockout stages with a win in our next game. Again that’s money in the bank which will come in very handy. Also, you look at how we can bring young players in such as Benn, Makama and Gallagher for games with the senior players which they can only benefit from in the long run. I get the U21 team’s involvement still upsetting many, but they are a necessary evil for the competition as that is why the money pot is what it is.

3. James Norwood really should never be mentioned as a possible transfer ever again. His name has frequently been linked with us whenever he moves on. Last night showed why his name should be struck off any such musings in the future. A ridiculous petulant sending off which was fortunate not to have severely injured Jay Benn.

Thank you to Graham Burell and Lincoln City Football Club for the photograph!
