Lincoln City boss Keith Alexander was delighted with his side?s display against Northampton ? despite seeing the Imps squander victory by conceding a 93rd minute equaliser at Sixfields Stadium.
City had taken the lead through Gary Birch?s 13th minute strike, but their inability to add a second goal cost them dear as Josh Low struck deep into stoppage-time to deny them a crucial vicrory.
But Alexander, who was pleased at gaining a point, was left to rue his side?s profligacy in front of goal yet again: ?We?d have taken a point beforehand as this is a difficult place to come. But we?re disappointed not have taken all three.
?We were better than Northampton throughout. They only had one shot in the second-half, we didn?t take our chances and that?s cost us all three points.?
The Imps enjoyed a blistering start to the match, with both Birch and Gareth McAuley going close in the opening 10 minutes, before former Kidderminster striker Birch netted his eighth goal of the season after some cracking build-up play by ex-Cobbler Derek Asamoah.
And Nat Brown was denied immediately after the restart when goalkeeper Lee Harper brilliantly tipped his powerful drive over the bar.
A goal at that stage would surely have seen City clinch the win, but they were made to pay in the 93rd minute as Low latched on to Junior Mendes? flick to lob Alan Marriott and claim a share of the spoils.
?The game plan worked to perfection and we were lively up front,? added Alexander. ?We were excellent from start to finish and I?m delighted with the performance of every player. It?s a great point, but we should have had all three and that?s been the story of our season.?
Cobblers boss Colin Calderwood admitted his side underperformed and failed to get to grips with City: ?All credit to Lincoln, they put us under pressure and stifled our play.
?We didn?t play well and couldn?t find any fluency. It was a disappointing performance and it didn?t look as though we were going to get anything out of the game. We were poor, but we still ended up with a point.?
