Ahead of Saturday’s match away at Accrington Stanley in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Mix the play up. Essentially do what we did in the first half against Cheltenham. Players were allowed the opportunity to roam around the pitch knowing that a teammate was going to cover. This makes attackers really difficult to mark as defenders don’t know whether to stick or twist. It allowed for Cullen to drop deep on occasions with House running further forward. It also allowed for a much smoother passing game to be played as players were finding spaces quickly and efficiently. Continue with this idea and you will open up any defence.

2. Play to the final whistle. I see that in a number of recent games Accrington have scored very late goals to earn points. It suggests a team that doesn’t give in. I’m sure all of us who braved the Storm of February 2020 still shudder over their injury-time winner. So if we are holding a slender lead come the 90th minute we need to keep switched on. They keep going and we could concede a late one again which would be a tad annoying.

3. Enjoy the game. It’s not very often that players can go into a match with nothing but a bit of pride to play for but this is the case on Saturday. Two games left to play and enjoy in the expected sunshine. The lack of pressure should allow the players to play their natural games and I do think that man-for-man, our team are better footballers than those from Accrington. If the players play with smiles on their faces knowing that we travelling supporters want to see a good game of football and will not get on their backs if it doesn’t go to plan, that confidence in their own abilities will get the three points. Just don’t bring the buckets and spades as the beach can wait until May please lads.

Thank you to Graham Burrell and Lincoln City Football Club for the photograph!
